Assertion and Managing Difficult Staff Situations

  • Diversity, Management Skills
  • Duration: One day
  • Information

We all face difficult staff situations from time to time and our credibility as managers depends upon our ability to manage the outcome effectively. Part of the problem is dealing with the internal stress a situation may naturally create and then responding appropriately, using the right level of power and assertion. This course helps managers achieve this balance.

The course is designed for managers and team leaders who need to manage their staff and potential conflicts within their team. We learn through experience what works for us and, equally, what doesn’t! This course is designed to speed up this learning process so that handling difficult staff situations becomes a productive process from day one.

    • By the end of the course participants will be able to:

    • Identify situations that can cause personal stress and also their instinctive response to it

    • Develop a strategy for dealing with those situations

    • Adopt a style that is positive and straight forward rather than aggressive or submissive

    • Behave assertively in situations involving confrontation

    • Employ constructive behaviours in the face of negative attitudes

    • Communicate directly and effectively

    Session 1:

    • Causes of stress and strategies for managing them

    Session 2:

    • Distinguishing between ‘personality’, ‘attitude’ and ‘behaviour’

    Session 3:

    • The definition of assertive behaviour and how it differs from aggression and passive behaviour

    Session 4:

    • Causes of conflict and conflict resolution

    Session 5:

    • Moving from negative to positive presentation of messages

    Session 6:

    • Handling difficult people, awkward situations and confrontation

This programme is highly participative and will include analysis tools, input sessions and video role plays. Each participant will receive individual feedback and leave with specific actions to implement upon their return to work.
